CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Inflation has cooled in P.E.I. over the past year, though the price of food and other essentials remains high. While wages have risen for some, the number of people using services like food banks, community fridges and homeless shelters is increasing.

The process could cost at least $2,000 in fees to keep the fridge operating as it has for nearly three years.Mayor Philip Brown agreed with the need to help such organizations stay afloat since their only funding comes from donations. But he suggested a blanket policy could have unforeseen drawbacks, pointing to challenges with the early days of the affordable housing tax incentive, which offered too much when it was first set up.
“I know in the bigger picture, dealing with housing and everything else, municipalities are taking a very broad look at what they can do to incentivize and reduce some of the barriers for development overall.”
