CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Charlottetown doctor said her trip to Ethiopia last month has renewed her faith in the health-care system and humanity.
Jadin just returned from five weeks in Ethiopia in March and April 2024. The Belgian-born doctor moved to P.E.I. in 2021 from Kingston. Ont. “The only distinction lies in the scarcity of resources, materials and even blood. Everything we take for granted is even more scarce there and they don’t have enough physicians.”

At the time, there was only one anesthesiologist in the country. Today, there are more than 50.
During her residency program in Switzerland, Jadin decided early on to specialize in obstetrics and pursue a fellowship in Canada.Dr. Joel Parlow, chair of CASIEF and a professor at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., said the program Jadin took part in is a partnership with the university and the organization.
Parlow said the hundreds of volunteers with CASIEF see how the struggles in the Canadian health-care system pale in comparison to what much of the rest of the world is facing.“ have no clue as to how most of the world works,” Parlow said. “ makes you realize how very privileged we are here. Ethiopia has an enormous shortage of anesthesiologists.
