In the elevator backstage at the Forum Theatre in Melbourne, Australia, Crockett and his band carry their own gear. He’s not shy about doing things on his own — like releasing all 13 of his albums independently. “I’ve never been on a major label,” he says. “In fact, I just keep dodging them.”Crockett’s preshow ritual always involves his guitar: “I play acoustic as much as possible.
“I like to watch a Western or an old French-language film.”Before the concert, Crockett autographs posters and copies of his albums to sell at the merch table. “I sign probably a couple hundred vinyl a night,” he says. “And I spend every dollar that comes in on the show. It’s really important to me that people leave my show — no matter what the ticket price is — like, ‘Man, I got a deal.
