The Canadian Football League ( CFL ) has extended the suspension of American defensive lineman Shawn Lemon , adding two more games to his current indefinite ban for violating the league's drug policy . Lemon, who is 36, is already serving an indefinite suspension stemming from an incident in 2021 when he allegedly bet on CFL games, including one in which he played for the Calgary Stampeders.
This latest suspension arises from a positive test for Phentermine, an appetite suppressant often used for weight loss. Lemon's appeal of this ban was unsuccessful. The original indefinite suspension, imposed in April 2024, was due to the alleged gambling on games. At the time, the CFL stated that there was no evidence suggesting that any games were impacted by Lemon's actions and that his teammates, coaches, and the Stampeders organization were unaware of his betting activity.Lemon's initial suspension allowed him to participate in Montreal's training camp and play for the team in the 2023 season. He helped Montreal achieve four consecutive wins to start the season. However, in July, an arbitrator overturned the previous decision, reinstating the indefinite suspension. Lemon, a three-time Grey Cup champion, has a remarkable career spanning 13 CFL seasons, recording 102 sacks. He has played for every CFL team except Hamilton, winning Grey Cups with Calgary (2014), Toronto (2017), and Montreal (2023). His professional journey also includes stints with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as teams in the Arena Football League and the Indoor Football League. Throughout his CFL career, Lemon amassed 262 tackles, two special-teams tackles, three interceptions, 30 forced fumbles, and even returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown
