Calgary Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson speaks with media before a game against the Toronto Argonauts at McMahon Stadium on Aug 3, 2023.When they say the Canadian Football League seasons doesn’t really get going until Labour Day, teams weren’t supposed to take it literally.
“I was shocked to see us at 0-9. I was also shocked ,” said Elks quarterback Tre Ford, who comes in having guided his team to back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2021 Labour Day Classic. “I don’t know exactly what their record was two weeks ago, but I definitely thought they were going to be a little bit higher in the standings. I thought they were definitely going to have more wins.
“Well, I beg to differ. I mean, those nine that we played prior to finally winning a game, those all counted,” said Elks head coach and general manager Chris Jones. “And we certainly would like a couple or three or four of those back.As is the fact Edmonton has only won the Labour Day Classic once in the past 10 years.
So, too, do the Stampeders, of course. But it turns out they are putting much more faith into the notion things don’t really get going until Labour Day.
