CEO of tear gas manufacturer Safariland resigned today from the Whitney Museum’s board after protests that began last year by lisettevoytko
Kanders, who maintains that Safariland’s products help save law enforcement officers’ lives, wrote in his resignation letter, “The targeted campaign of attacks against me and my company that has been waged these past several months has threatened to undermine the important work of the Whitney. I joined this board to help the museum prosper. I do not wish to play a role, however inadvertent, in its demise.
Kanders started his career in mergers and acquisitions for Morgan Stanley before leaving to work for Canadian billionaire Jim Pattison. Kanders went on to acquire a group of eyewear stores and manufacturers, which he sold in 1996 for $226 million. He invested some of the profits into a company called American Body Armor, and after post-9/11 sales took off, he continued investing in defense companies.
