Other than its ornate ceiling, the Senate chamber in Centre Block looked extremely bare when news media toured it in mid-November. Once the building's restoration is done in the 2030s, senators can come back here from the former conference centre down the street.

MPs, senators and political staff aren’t expected to be back in the building for years to come. Once a year, members of the media are given a strictly-guided tour to see progress on the renovations, which will rejuvenate the Gothic Revival-style building’s many historical attributes. The work will also reinforce Centre Block’s foundation, improve workspaces for politicians and staff and create a modern and accessible complex with a new underground welcome centre for visitors. The project won’t be finished until the early 2030s and is set to cost between $4.5- and $5-billion.Originally opened in 1927, the Centre Block’s interior has now been gutted. The building’s doors, murals, windows, chandeliers and furniture, have been labelled, removed and stored to be brought back. In the meantime, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre have been sparring in Question Period at nearby West Block. Operations of the Senate are in Ottawa’s nearby former downtown train station. The Centre Block project was prompted by years of debate over several governments that eventually decided something had to be done to save the deteriorating building.
