A rainbow crosswalk in Saanich was vandalized with black paint, while street banners marking Pride month in Langford were spray-painted red in early June, less than 24 hours after installation.
Central Saanich police are seeking witnesses after a rainbow crosswalk at Bayside Middle School was defaced with hateful words and images.Mayor Ryan Windsor said he woke up to a “very disheartening” post on Facebook about the damaged crosswalk.Windsor contacted staff, who have scrubbed out the hateful messages. However, power washing the crosswalk has led to faded patches where words and images have been washed off, he said.
“They’ve done their best basically for now, and we’re working to perhaps plan a community event to put it back and maybe update it a little bit,” Windsor said. The incident is the third act of vandalism involving symbols representing Pride Month, coming just days after a rainbow crosswalk in Saanich was vandalized with black paint.
In Langford, five street banners marking Pride Month were spray-painted red in early June and had to be removed less than 24 hours after installation. Anyone with dashcam footage or who saw the incident in Central Saanich is asked to call police at 250-652-4441.
