A new partnership aims to turn Central Park into an open-air laboratory for scientists studying the impact of climate change on NYC. Information gained can help the city build new nature-based strategies for staving off the harms of climate change.

Staff spent nearly 3,000 hours to repair the damage, which included removing 23 trees and clearing flooded areas at Bethesda Fountain and park roadways.

Those trees can also be instrumental in helping cities fight climate change by absorbing carbon. The forested areas of the city account for 25% of the total tree canopy, but store nearly 70% of the total carbon in all the trees across all five boroughs. They store four times as much carbon as street trees.
