Boys cross country coaches look for ways to keep their runners healthy when it matters most.
Qualifying for the state cross country meet is no simple task. Often, injuries are the roadblock.
“Getting sixth in the region puts a bad taste in your mouth, especially when we weren’t healthy,” said Walters, whose program last reached state in 2019. “You can talk about thinning and tapering and peaking at the right time, but at the end of the day, you need to be healthy on the day of the regional. Last year Bryan King wasn’t healthy, and it made a big difference.
“Kids are not riding bikes around like they used to, and we have them sit all day in school before coming to practice. We try to keep progressing in fitness, and that’s the challenge every cross country coach has. We’re trying some yoga in post-workouts. Anything we can do to stay healthy, we’re doing it.”
“It’s a different animal to be coaching Division I in central Ohio and the teams have improved so much in the last five years,” said Stewart, whose Rockets won boys state titles in 1994 and 1995."You not only have to be good but you have to be healthy. If you have one kid off it can have a big effect on you.”
