Janet Silver: Censorship, defamation and the politics of battling misinformation | National Newswatch

As politicians and judicial officials in Canada and the U.S. weigh concerns and allegations of censorship, interference and misinformation in news content, decisions on both sides of the border are bound to impact the news industry in ways we may not come to fully appreciate for many months to come.

Incidentally, while Google argues the bill will contribute to misinformation, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters says Google’s tactic of blocking access for some Canadians is censorship. In other countries where similar laws have been put in place, Google and Facebook blocked news access and/or shut down their news platforms instead of paying fees. In some cases, it took years for agreements to be reached with those countries and for content to be reinstated.

Meanwhile, south of the border, the trial of Dominion Voting Systems, which was founded in Toronto with U.S. operations based in Denver, against Fox is set to begin next month. Dominion’s US$1.6 billion defamation lawsuit says that executives with Fox knew the network was broadcasting lies and repeating former-president Donald Trump and his allies’ false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

With continued cutbacks in newsrooms across the country and big tech giants like Google censoring access to Canadian news content while Fox broadcasting officials prepare for their court case south of the border, news at all levels on both sides of the border is reaching a tipping point.
