Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward suffered a right ankle sprain fighting for a rebound late in the team’s Game 1 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 30-year-old was helped off the court after landing awkwardly in a scramble for a loose ball with close to three minutes remaining in the game.Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN
reported that Hayward would be undergoing an MRI to determine the severity of the injury later tonight. The injury is not to the same ankle he injured in his Celtics debut back in 2017, when he suffered a fractured tibia and dislocated left ankle less than six minutes into the Celtics’ regular-season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He missed the rest of the season.
Hayward averaged 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists on 50 per cent shooting from the field, and 38.3 per cent from three, during the 2019-20 season.
