The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has ordered a halt to the publication of all scientific research authored or co-authored by its scientists. The directive, aimed at reviewing materials for “forbidden terms” such as “gender,” “LGBT,” and “pregnant person,” has sparked widespread concern in the scientific community.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) issued a directive to government scientists, compelling them to either withdraw or halt the publication of all papers slated for medical or scientific journals. This order, aimed at reviewing materials for “ forbidden terms ”, was revealed through an email obtained by Dr. Jeremy Faust and published on his Substack.
The email, sent by the CDC’s chief science officer, instructed researchers to cease the advancement of manuscripts currently under revision or those already accepted for publication. Researchers were specifically directed to remove any mention or reference to a list of terms that includes “gender, transgender, pregnant person, pregnant people, LGBT, transsexual, non-binary, nonbinary, assigned male at birth, assigned female at birth, biologically male, biologically female.” This information was reported by Inside Medicine, citing the email. The order applies to any paper authored or co-authored by a CDC scientist. Reuters further clarified that if scientists are co-authors on a paper with external researchers, they must remove their names from the manuscripts. This controversial move comes after the CDC's recent removal of references to transgender people and gender identity from its website on Friday, following a deadline imposed by the Office of Personnel Management. The office had recently ordered an end to all agency programs that utilize taxpayer money to promote or reflect gender ideology. Inside Medicine pointed out that many scientific manuscripts could be impacted by this order as terms like “gender” are frequently used to describe basic demographic information. Dr. Faust added that there was only one political appointee serving within the entirety of the CDC.
