“We have good momentum heading into NorCals,” Curtin said. “I’m proud of our guys.”
SAN FRANCISCO — Archbishop Riordan’s celebration after a dominant win over Sacred Heart Prep wouldn’t last too long.
The Crusaders’ 17-point victory on Wednesday and bounce-back win against Menlo-Atherton wasn’t enough to overcome a disappointing loss to Sacred Heart Cathedral to open pool play on Monday. The Fightin’ Irish had Riordan’s number having played the Crusaders two days before pool play. The Gators got off to a hot start, hitting a few 3-pointers, cutting to the basket for some open layups and forcing a handful of turnovers in order to take an 11-1 lead early. Kaia Berridge scored Riordan’s first field goal, a 3-pointer, with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter. That’s when Wise found his mismatch and took over. A pair of dunks sandwiched a Kevin Durant-style fadeaway two to give Riordan its first lead and close the half out with a 26-23 lead.
