CBC/Radio-Canada is bringing back Hockey Night in Canada for its 90th season, airing eight prime time PWHL games on Saturday nights beginning Dec. 5, after losing NHL rights in June.

CBC's Hockey Night in Canada is returning for its 90th season this fall, but with a new focus. The longest-running sports program in the world will air eight prime time Professional Women's Hockey League games on Saturday nights instead of NHL action.

CBC Announces PWHL Broadcast Partnership

The CBC announced Monday morning that the revived broadcast will begin Dec. 5. The defending Walter Cup champion Montreal Victoire will visit Hamilton's expansion team in the first game. The partnership marks a major shift for the iconic program. On June 16, CBC announced it would no longer broadcast NHL games after failing to reach a new sublicensing deal with national rights-holder Rogers Sportsnet.

CBC’s ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ to return this season with PWHL games

The PWHL is expected to launch its fourth season in late November or early December. The league now has 12 teams after adding expansion franchises in Detroit, Las Vegas, San Jose and Hamilton. The full PWHL season schedule will be released this Friday. The league will also host its first all-star event on March 7 in Toronto.

CBC's coverage will include pre- and post-game panel analysis plus digital content on CBCSports.ca and social media. The network retained the Hockey Night in Canada trademark for future use.

"Our partnership with the PWHL opens a new chapter in sports history," said Chris Wilson, CBC's executive director of Sports and Olympics. "We are proud to announce the return of the iconic brand, building on this beloved Canadian tradition with the PWHL's growing fanbase. " Amy Scheer, PWHL executive vice-president of business operations, said the CBC partnership has been instrumental in the league's accessibility and growth.

PWHL Expands Radio Coverage Rights

"Hockey Night in Canada is a fixture in Canadian sports culture, and its Saturday night schedule has ritually captivated hockey fans for nearly a century," she said. "The opportunity to be part of this iconic brand represents another groundbreaking step for the PWHL to connect with our fans and forge new traditions together. " Beyond the eight Saturday games, CBC/Radio-Canada acquired exclusive audio broadcast rights for all Victoire games in Canada during the 2026-27 season.

CBC Sports Primetime, a new weekly Saturday show hosted by Andi Petrillo, premieres Oct. 3. Primetime airs on CBC and streams on CBC Gem. It launches with the Canada Super60 cricket league and will feature major sporting events, professional women's sports and coverage of Canadian high performance athletes in Olympic and Paralympic sport. The October broadcast schedule includes the Grand Slam of Curling and ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix.

CBC Commits to Women's Sports Equity

"We're delivering on our commitment to equal coverage of women's sports across our platforms," Wilson said. Radio-Canada's new weekly Sunday show, Rendez-vous Podium, debuts Oct. 18, hosted by Jacinthe Taillon. It airs Sunday afternoons on ICI Tele and ICI TOU. TV, combining live events with human stories.

The series will let viewers follow athletes on their journey to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. It will cover people making a difference at elite and amateur levels.
