CBC partnered with Cornell Public Library in Markham, Ont., to offer a four-week Radio Camp for teens to learn how to make their own short radio documentary and share stories about their community.

CBC CommunicationsSome of the students from Radio Camp pose with their certificates.

During the first week of workshops, the class learned all about active listening and soundscapes. Through a series of ear-cleaning exercises, each participant learned to tune their ears to the ever-evolving sonic world around them and recorded their findings in a sound diary. "Radio Camp has been an important program in engaging youth with technology and media, thinking about their role in the community and providing them with access to the high quality of instruction they received through CBC."By Week 3, the students learned how to use different microphones, access sound libraries, and edit using open-source audio software.

Diverse is an understatement. The range of documentaries the students came up with speaks to the potential of sound as a medium for storytelling and the creativity of the participants.
