“I’m a firm believer you can find talent in the most usual circumstances,” continued the gaffer with his trademark grin. “We’ve got our scouting network, we’ve got data that’s out there, we’ve got agents we can talk to, and we’ve got profiles of players. But what these open trials do is create an experience and an opportunity for those that may have not been through the regular systems to come out and show us what they’ve got. And actually, we’ve been pleasantly surprised at the level of talent.

“What we wanted to do was have a filtering process,” Wheeldon said. “And then we filtered it to a top group and a bottom group, and then we filtered it to the final 11-v-11 experience, which was coached two of our full-time staff members — Leon Hapgood and Tofa Fakunle. “He was terrific to show that type of energy and desire,” added Wheeldon, who also got a look this week — in separate sessions from trials — at players on their radar who have starred at the U SPORTS, League1 Ontario and Quebec’s PLSQ circuits. “Guys were here for the trials from coast-to-coast and guys from the United States. And then there were some nice young players — a couple that are still 17 or 18 that actually have some high potential.
