Canadian Premier League champions Cavalry FC were able to finish their pre-season training camp in California despite a wildfire evacuation alert. The team faced a temporary disruption but managed to adapt, continuing their preparations for the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Canadian Premier League champion Cavalry FC faced a potential disruption to their pre-season training camp in California due to a wildfire near their base in Chula Vista. The team, preparing for their CONCACAF Champions Cup series against Mexico's Pumas UNAM, received an evacuation alert on Friday morning. However, thanks to a couple of days of rain and the presence of a reservoir between the team's location and the wildfire, they were able to continue their training schedule.
The only significant impact was the cancellation of a scheduled friendly match against the Columbus Crew, which had to leave California early due to the fires. Cavalry coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. stated that the team adapted well to the situation, moving to a different training location and taking advantage of a day at the beach. The team is scheduled to return to Calgary on Wednesday as planned. The wildfire situation caused U.S. Soccer to relocate its under-17 men's and under-16 women's training camps from Chula Vista to Mesa, Arizona. Cavalry FC will host Pumas UNAM in the first leg of their Champions Cup series on February 6th in Langford, British Columbia, due to the Canadian winter, with the return leg taking place in Mexico City on February 13th
