Campbell’s cause of death has officially been ruled to be “submersion in a body of water” — and his manner of death has been determined to be an accident, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Massachusetts.

The initial investigation by the State Police found no evidence that Campbell’s death was suspicious, with no signs of trauma observed on his body,Campbell, 45, was paddleboarding in a lake near the Obamas’ summer home on Martha’s Vineyard on July 23 when he lost his balance and drowned. “Tafari was a beloved part of our family,” the Obamas wrote. “When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House – creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together. In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.”
