'Watching this game,' wrote Terry Pluto, 'I wonder if the Browns could have won a few more games with Keenum instead of the 'beat up' Mayfield – that’s how Mayfield characterized himself a few times this season.'
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Browns’ season of hope ended on a gray, damp, drizzly January afternoon in a half-filled FirstEnergy Stadium.
It ended with a tearful Doug Dieken waving goodbye and thanking Browns fans, as this will be his last game in the radio booth. The 73-year-old Dieken has been with the team for 50 years, beginning with his time at left tackle. It ended with D’Ernest Johnson doing what he always does when given a chance – running hard and running effectively with a purpose. Give Johnson 123 yards and a TD in 25 carries.
It ended with the Browns defense playing as it did much of this season – playing fast and making life tough on opposing quarterbacks.and Baker Mayfield having a an upbeat meeting last Friday. Now they are planning good things together for 2022 after Mayfield has his shoulder surgery. As I write this in the fourth quarter, the Browns are still playing hard. The stadium is perhaps 80% empty.
