In reality, economies are characterized by countless daily decisions made by individuals and corporations on where to invest, what to buy, as well as where to live and where to work — decisions often made for personal and idiosyncratic reasons. The budget then proceeds to stretch the truth by stating that tax credits are aimed at “boosting overall investment,” and that the “private sector” will be left to “determine how to invest based on market signals.” It’s obvious that the Liberals want people to believe they have seen the error of their interventionist ways.Article content
Far from being market-driven, tax credits encourage businesses to shop around for the jurisdiction that will shamelessly provide the most public money for them to “invest.” Want a new Amazon warehouse in your city? How about a new NHL arena? Or an HBO production? Or what about a Volkswagen battery plant? You can bet there is a tax credit for that, in addition to whatever other more direct subsidies — more accurately, bribes — are on offer.
