Ottawa grows ambitions to micromanage every area of Canadian life
The budget is expected to include a whole slate of costly and expansive NDP priorities that will combine with the Liberals’ own pricey policies to create not just big government, but mammoth government: a government that is not just big in terms of how much it spends, but in its ambition to federalize every area of Canadian life.on; or the Liberals’ national daycare plan, which the NDP leader wants enshrined into law; or forcing carmakers to build electric vehicles.
Ten-dollar-a-day daycare might sound appealing, but the result for many families will be a publicly funded waiting list, as it is for many in Quebec already. The outcomes don’t matter to the government as much as the apparent belief that because caring for children is “important,” it can’t be left to the provinces, or, heaven forbid, the independent decisions of parents and daycare providers.
Or consider housing, where a lack of supply combined with low interest rates has artificially inflated prices. According toon the budget, the Liberals will institute a two-year ban on some foreign home buyers, which, in fashion typical of this government, interferes in private decisions to sell legally owned property, and doesn’t address why Canada is attractive to so-called speculators.
Housing is one area, of many, where the federal government should just leave it to the provinces or cities. While the Liberals plan to spend billions to work with municipalities to improve their zoning to encourage more development, it is yet another example of Ottawa jealously moving into other jurisdictions. The cost of these initiatives are waved away as “investments,” which make them sound prudent. The programs themselves are designed to be crowd-pleasing and offer the illusion that life is being made more affordable.
