Reid Carruthers and Kevin Koe qualified for the Canadian men's curling championship, the Tim Hortons Brier, after winning their respective provincial finals. The Brier will take place in Kelowna, British Columbia, from February 28 to March 9.
Reid Carruthers and Kevin Koe secured their spots in the Canadian men's curling championship, the Tim Hortons Brier, after triumphing in their respective provincial finals on Sunday. Carruthers, representing Manitoba, defeated Braden Calvert 9-7 in Portage la Prairie, while Koe, from Alberta, downed Evan Van Amsterdam 9-7 in Stettler. These victories completed the 18-team field for the Brier, set to take place in Kelowna, British Columbia, from February 28 to March 9.
The ultimate winner will represent Canada at the men's world championship, scheduled for March 29 to April 6 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.Joining Carruthers and Koe in the Brier field are a roster of skilled curlers, including Cameron de Jong (British Columbia), Rylan Kleiter (Saskatchewan), Sam Mooibroek (Ontario), John Epping (Northern Ontario), Tyler Smith (Prince Edward Island), Ty Di Lello (Newfoundland and Labrador), Owen Purcell (Nova Scotia), Thomas Scoffin (Yukon), Felix Asselin (Quebec), Shane Latimer (Nunavut), James Grattan (New Brunswick), and Aaron Bartling (Northwest Territories).Notable among the competitors is six-time champion Brad Gushue of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, returning to defend his title. Brad Jacobs, Mike McEwen, and Matt Dunstone secured their spots in Kelowna via pre-qualification based on their rankings at the end of the 2023-24 season. Jacobs, a multi-time Canadian, world, and Olympic champion, took over as skip for Brendan Bottcher's Alberta-based team, ranked No. 2 in Canada last season. Bottcher, in turn, replaced E.J. Harnden as Gushue's second in October. The Brier winner can earn a berth in November's Olympic trials, provided their team finishes in the top six at the world championship. Gushue and Jacobs have already qualified for the trials. Should either Gushue or Jacobs emerge victorious in Kelowna, the trials berth will go to the highest-ranked team at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season following the Players' Championship in April. This year marks Carruthers' 12th Brier appearance. He capitalized on a steal of two points in the first end and added another four in the fourth, establishing a 6-1 lead over Calvert. While Calvert fought back with deuces in the fifth, seventh, and ninth ends, he trailed by one heading into the final end without the hammer. His final stone in the 10th end, a double hit, missed its mark. For Koe, a four-time national and two-time world champion, this will be his 13th Brier appearance. He narrowly missed the playoffs last year in Regina, marking only the second time he's failed to advance. Koe's team scored deuces in the first, third, and fifth ends, stole a point in the sixth, and added another two in the ninth, leading 9-5 heading into the final end. Koe ran Van Amsterdam out of rocks.
