The motion would have forwarded the integrity commissioner\u0027s investigation to Calgary Police Service and the Minister of Municipal Affairs.
Coun. Peter Demong was the first to give his thoughts during the debate. He started by calling Carra a “dumbass” for not filling out his council disclosure forms. Mayor Jyoti Gondek asked him to retract that insult, which he did. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.“I do not believe it is my job or the job of this council to suddenly supersede the authority of the integrity commissioner,” said Demong.
Coun. Kourtney Penner said while she was deeply disappointed in Carra’s actions on his disclosure statements, it was “personal money on a personal matter.” She said council cannot compare this matter with other previous matters, suggesting without actually naming former Coun. Joe Magliocca and his expense scandal from the previous council.
“It’s two pages, not three thousand,” said Sharp. “So this was not an oversight. People need to have confidence that council is here to represent citizens, not feather their nests. And that’s what that disclosure is all about.” “If a breach is so dire, that it’s considered criminal, it is absolutely within the purview of the Integrity Commissioner to give us that information in the report,” said Gondek. “And it would be my understanding that one of the sanctions that could be recommended is to have counsel refer this over to the police service because that’s how it works.”
