Liberal leadership contender Mark Carney is set to announce a plan to abandon the consumer carbon tax while maintaining industrial pricing. Carney argues that the consumer tax is divisive and will be replaced with incentives for greener choices, such as energy-efficient appliances and electric vehicles. He also proposes that large polluters, including oil and gas companies, contribute to funding these incentives while paying their fair share for emissions.

OTTAWA — Liberal leadership contender Mark Carney is expected to announce a plan on Friday to abandon consumer carbon pricing but keep industrial pricing in place.

A campaign spokesperson said Carney will reveal more details at an event in Halifax on Friday morning where he will be joined by former housing minister Sean Fraser and the Liberals' Atlantic caucus chair Kody Blois. The consumer branch adds the price to the purchase price of 22 forms of fuel bought by individual consumers or smaller businesses and non-profit entities like schools and hospitals. It adds about 17.6 cents to a litre of gasoline and 15 cents to a cubic metre of natural gas.
