Sprint legend Carl Lewis slammed the United States men’s 4×100\u002Dmetre relay team Thursday for failing to qualify for the event final.
A bumbled exchange between Ronnie Baker and Fred Kerley was the lowlight in a sixth-place finish in the qualifying heat. China and Canada and Italy booked their tickets, but the country with the deepest track team at the Games was left humiliated once more.
The USA team did everything wrong in the men's relay. The passing system is wrong, athletes running the wrong legs, and it was clear that there was no leadership. It was a total embarrassment, and completely unacceptable for a USA team to look worse than the AAU kids I saw .There is little opportunity to work on exchanges at the Games, but every other foursome is in the same boat.
The Americans haven’t won the Olympic relay since 2000 in Sydney and have been tripped up 10 times at the Summer Games and worlds in the past 26 years due to disqualification, dropped baton, a doping violation or bad exchange. They finished second at London 2012 but had to return the silver because of Tyson Gay’s doping suspension.
