There was an armed carjacking in Toronto’s northwest corner Friday evening as vehicle thefts continue to surge in the city.
According to a tweet from the Toronto Police Service, two suspects stole a vehicle near the intersection of Keele Street and Finch Avenue West. There were no injuries, police said. Toronto is experiencing a huge uptick in car thefts. As of this week, 4,250 vehicles have been stolen — up almost 60 per cent from last year.
Most vehicles are taken overnight without the owner being aware. However, carjackings have also increased in recent years, rising 39 per cent between 2019 and 2020. In May, thieves robbed Toronto Maple Leaf wingerin connection with a month-long carjacking spree in which the suspects allegedly engaged in “extreme violence” and used firearms to attack victims across the GTA.found insurance rates were significantly increasing for car models that are often targeted by theft.
