COVID\u002D19 public health mandates may be over in Saskatchewan, but the pandemic continues to have an impact on care homes in the province.

According to the Saskatchewan government’s website, between Feb. 27 and March 5 there were 17 reported outbreaks at care homes. So far this year, there have been 74 outbreaks in care homes

“The health-care workers in this province have been abandoned. Many of our members call and they are telling us how exhausted they are, how the short staffing is continuing to create a problem,” Jalloh said during a phone interview on Monday. Jalloh said morale among health-care workers is “extremely low” due to the pandemic and staffing resources. He said temporary positions are continually posted, and those temporary workers eventually leave the province for full-time jobs.

“The Sask. Party government has decided to put their own political agenda ahead of the lives and health of seniors and to pretend as if the pandemic is over and that they’ve moved on, but seniors living in care don’t have that luxury,” said Love. One resident also expressed concern at isolation requirements for care home residents even if they don’t test positive for COVID-19.
