The Cardinals plan to utilize Collins on the outside of their defense as a hybrid pass rusher and run defender.
Collins entered the league as a positionless talent, but make no mistake, this signals a change from his pro usage. Of the 1,076 defensive snaps Collins played last season, just 182 of them occurred at outside linebacker, according to Pro Football Focus. Expect that number to rise exponentially under Gannon’s vision.
The Cardinals will move Collins all over their defensive formation. In theory, it should place him in advantageous positions to make impact plays. Despite posting numbers in 2022, Collins struggled in some areas. PFF credited Collins with missing 18 tackles en route to earning a run-stopping grade of 45.2. A new role could help Collins remove some of his run-defending warts. But there is an element of risk involved after Collins finally settled into a more traditional linebacker role in 2022.
