The St. Louis Cardinals have secured rookie standout Wetherholt with a major contract extension, marking their largest pre-arbitration deal since Albert Pujols. The 23-year-old infielder is currently enjoying a strong debut season, showcasing elite defensive skills and offensive production while contributing to the team's postseason push.
, the latter of whom reported that Wetherholt's contract will mark the Cardinals' largest extension for a pre-arbitration player since they signed Albert Pujols to a seven-year, $100 million deal in 2004.
That investment came to fruition, to put it simply. Pujols is destined for the Baseball Hall of Fame andWetherholt has 13 dingers in his first go-around with the Cardinals. They drafted him with the seventh overall pick two years ago out of West Virginia. The Baltimore-born Wetherholt, going yard in that game and then walking off the Tampa Bay Rays in the 10th inning the next day.
Still only 23, he's currently slashing .267/.362/.411 with 36 RBI and nine stolen bases to go along with that blossoming homer count. The nine bags he's swiped so far are tied for the second most of any Cardinals player this season..
As of Friday afternoon, they're 48-44 and only three games out of the third wild-card spot in the National League. Wetherholt's reported extension is poised to keep him under team control through multiple years of free agency. The Cardinals are securing a star in the making amid his NL Rookie of the Year campaign.
