RELATED Car Review: 2019 Subaru BRZ Raiu Car Review: 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata Not so with the Fiat 124 Spider. True, it’s basically an ND-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata — hell, they’re even built in the same factory — but FCA put in enough work to make the little car distinctive over its Japanese cousin. Styling notwithstanding, the biggest tweaks are under the skin: Rather than Mazda’s delightful 2.0-litre normally aspirated four-cylinder engine, the 124 uses Fiat’s 1.
On the outside, the 124 Abarth is a love letter to the 1970s. The front fascia, particularly the grille, bug-eyed headlights and ridged hood, harken back to the original 124. From the side, the profile is almost entirely Miata, save for some slightly longer front and rear overhang — while the wheelbase is identical, the 124 Abarth is about 10 centimetres longer.
