Human remains discovered inside; identification pending forensic confirmation
2/2A vehicle containing human remains has been recovered from the Kootenay River as part of the investigation into the disappearance of a Creston-area man more than 22 years ago.
Creston RCMP said Friday the vehicle is believed to be connected to George Franklin Davis, who was reported missing from the Creston area in July 2004. At the time of his disappearance, Davis was reported to have left a residence in the 1300 block of Channel Road to get cigarettes. Davis, who was 40 at the time, was last seen driving a brown 1981 Chrysler LeBaron with B.C. licence plate 191BHR.
A volunteer search and recovery dive team assisting Davis’s family located a fully submerged vehicle in the Kootenay River on Sept. 24 near an area commonly known as the Old Ferry Landing. Police said the vehicle’s description and licence plate were consistent with records associated with Davis. The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team attended the scene Sept. 28 and assisted with the recovery of the vehicle.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been formally confirmed, but investigators believe the remains are those of Davis based on the vehicle and the circumstances of its recovery. A positive identification is pending forensic analysis and confirmation through the BC Coroners Service. Police said the death is not believed to be suspicious and no foul play is suspected based on evidence gathered to date.
The investigation remains ongoing pending the results of forensic testing and confirmation from the BC Coroners Service.
