SYDNEY, N.S. — When Calvin Day of North Sydney applied for a provincial seniors care grant this year, he got an unwelcome surprise.
“I never thought anything like that could happen for me'; Seniors wish granting organization ramping up Cape Breton presenceDay said the grant would have helped a lot, especially when he had to replace his furnace and his roof.The seniors care grant, according to the government website, helps low-income seniors with the cost of household services , health-care services and home heating. Grants are $750 for each household.Day isn’t alone in getting a shock at being disqualified.
“I thought I was the only one,” said the woman, who didn’t qualify for the seniors care grant either. “There wasn’t a chair to be found.” Tilley also noted the reduction in the home heat grant this year — down to $600 from $1,000 last year — with the income threshold down to $75,000 for a household, down from $85,000 in 2022.Cape Breton Centre-Whitney Pier NDP MLA Kendra Coombes:"It’s not like someone inherited a million dollars.
