The award is voted on by coaches, players and media members in each of the league’s 32 member cities. Shaw's the first Cape Breton-born player to receive the award. In 1993-94, Cape Breton Oilers forward Jim Nesich was honoured with the accolade.Shaw, 30, guided the Marlies to the North Division championship while leading the team with 21 goals, 45 assists and 66 points in 69 games.

Shaw, a 10-year pro, has recorded 104 goals and 123 assists for 227 points in 379 career AHL games with Toronto, Belleville, Manitoba, San Diego, Springfield, Portland and San Antonio. The Fred T.
