The organization’s secretary, Rubin Binder, said there are “pretty clear risks” not mentioned in Nova Copper’s proposal released last month. The major ones include the locations of wells, some of which are within proposed mining sites. According to its proposal, Nova Copper doesn’t plan to start full-scale mining on the hills until 2025 at the earliest. But the company has already been undertaking exploratory mining near Coxheath on sites with landowners’ permission, CEO Harry Cabrita told the Post in July.
Cabrita said while copper mining will be restricted to the existing Coxheath copper pit on the north of the mountain, Nova Copper is exploring other minerals over a 30-square-kilometre area. “It’s mining that happens anywhere within the watershed,” White said. “Anything that happens in that area is potentially going to pollute Blacketts Lake.”
It’s a problem for the Blacketts Lake ecosystem because the lampmussell is an important species for cleaning harmful species such as algae from the water, White said.
