Cape Breton Regional Police Logo. - CAPE BRETON POST FILESYDNEY — Having stopped more than 5,000 vehicles in the final three weeks of the year, Cape Breton Regional Police report only charging one driver with impaired operation.
In the weeks leading up to New Year’s Eve, traffic safety and patrol officers stopped and checked more than 5,000 vehicles for increased education and awareness on the importance of sober driving. The effort was aided by representatives from MADD Cape Breton. During that period, only one driver, a 52-year-old man from Sydney Mines, was charged Dec. 21 with impaired driving and other related offences. Also during that period, police issued approximately 50 tickets to drivers operating vehicles without valid and required paperwork. A 42-year-old female from Sydney, stopped Jan. 1, and a 52-year-old man from Glace Bay, stopped Jan. 2, were also charged with impaired related offences. In a press release, police thanked the public for their assistance with road safety efforts by calling 911 to report suspected impaired drivers. Police remind motorists that impaired driving can be deadly whether a vehicle, or an ATV, motorcycle, snowmobile, boat or other forms of transportation. Police also noted that damages and loss of life as a result of impaired driving are completely preventable and urged local residents to continue to drive sober, plan ahead for a designated driver or call a taxi.
