Seniors displaced after Yarmouth fire | SaltWire #fire #yarmouth #seniors #newsAccording to a leaked internal Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs document, there will be no Cape Breton moose hunt this year.
The department also declined to provide any of its biologists to speak on the state of moose populations in Cape Breton, which is distinct from the mainland population for which there isn’t a hunt. While the Assembly wasn’t willing to comment on a leaked internal document, they did provide details on an aerial survey of the Cape Breton moose population conducted in February.
“It is important to note that hunting is a factor, but it isn’t the only reasons the population is declining,” reads the document.Cape Breton outfitters who guide mainland hunters say they haven’t been consulted and are only learning about a potentially cancelled hunt through social media. “Government should be coming here, sitting down and explaining to us what’s going. They should be asking questions of us about the moose population.”
Between 2015 and 2018, Parks Canada spent $2.1 million – about $7,900 per moose – as part of its Bring Back the Boreal Forest reforestation and hunting campaign. “Some of them would have had multiple calves, so they were shooting one moose but they could have been killing three. They should have let nature take its course.”The program was based upon a 2015 Parks Canada document titled Hyperabundant Moose Management Plan.
