Taking a hike to the next level

Jonathan Maillet stands on top of Sugarloaf Head overlooking Quidi Vidi Village in St. John’s, N.L. The Sydney man crossed the 336-kilometre East Coast Trail in Newfoundland in less than a week as part of a grant from the Night of Adventure speaker. The feat was documented by the Whycocomagh-based social-media influencer team Daveyandsky. Contributed - ccSYDNEY — Before setting out on a record-breaking hike across rugged coastal terrain, there are lots of items you’d want to take.

“We were suffering with blisters pretty bad basically right from the get-go,” said Maillet, a federal civil servant, who was sponsored by a grant from the Night of Adventure speaker, whose founder Dave Greene joined him on the journey along with videographer Davey Anderson of the Whycocomagh-based social-media influencer team Daveyandsky.

Jonathan Maillet is seen at 4:30 a.m. after hiking 83 straight kilometres in 22 hours straight on Aug. 29 to complete the 336-kilometre East Coast Trail along the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador. The trek was completed in a record-breaking six days and 18 hours. Contributed - ccMaillet said in addition to the distance, the trail climbed about 15,000 feet in elevation. He described it as being both physically and psychologically demanding.

The last leg of the journey pushed him to his limits. On the final day, he hiked for 22 hours straight — approximately 83 kilometres — to meet his goal.“When you’re outside in the woods or the forest or on a multi-day trek, the only thing you’re thinking about is the present moment — getting from point A to point B. It’s so incredibly refreshing and it’s the perfect reset button from the everyday work cycle that we all go through,” he said.
