When the teacher didn't, Estwick asked to wear dresses to school and her mother knew something was wrong.The dresses and change of hair wasn't enough to make the teacher stop the backhanded insults and it wasn't the only time the Black-Cree Nova Scotian was treated poorly by educators going through school.

Estwick's new book,"The System Almost H.A.D. Me," aims to educate educators about the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy . It draws on her experiences as a student, her extensive education and it was inspired by one of her mentors - Marie Green of Whitney Pier.Tanya Estwick's book is available in hardcopy and ebook. It can be purchased through the Friessen Press website .Saturday at Melnick Hall in Whitney Pier from 2-5 p.m.
