SYDNEY, N.S. — When the 2022 NHL Entry Draft concluded and Brayden Schmitt didn't hear his name called by one of the league's 32 teams, a sense of ...
QMJHL Draft: Selected in the second-round, No. 34 overall, by the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in 2020One could argue the opportunity provided by the Avalanche was an eye-opening experience for Schmitt, one that helped push and motivate him to continue his development and drive to be a better player each day.
"I think my whole life I've been a leader," said Schmitt."I was captain of a lot of teams that I played for growing up. I don't try to change who I am; I just act myself and I know what's right and what's wrong and I use that to motivate younger players." "I was really excited, but it was tough to leave a team when you're the captain," said Schmitt, noting the Cape Breton community has the same small-town feel as Bible Hill.
Along with his offensive game, which he hopes to continue to improve on during the off-season, Schmitt has already brought stability to the club's defence core. Last weekend, Cape Breton defeated the Charlottetown Islanders in a pair of critical games in the league's standings. Schmitt was proud of his team's efforts but knows there's more work to be done as the club continues to push for playoff positioning.
