NEW WATERFORD, N.S. — The two dogs who helped save the lives of Hughie MacKay and Sharon Young from an early morning house fire earlier this week would, unfortunately, be the same dogs who couldn’t be saved from the blaze.

“So,” MacKay, 62, added, “she screamed out for me. I jumped up and went out to the kitchen — filled with black soot and the floor was hot on my feet. I took one breath and … ugh … couldn’t breathe anymore.”The couple said each managed to stick their heads out of a window to catch their breath. After McKinnon contacted 911, New Waterford Volunteer Fire Chief Matt Hawley said firefighters from the Walsh Avenue and the Scotchtown departments received the call around 5:41 a.m. and were dispatched to the MacLeod Avenue home.

“Everything revolved around them,” Young said. “ got Jax and Harley about 10 years ago when they were just six weeks old .”“Every morning when I get up, they would come over while I was getting dressed — they’d lay there, and I would give them a clean of their dirty eye areas and say, ‘Oh, you’re sleepy!’ They just absolutely loved that.”

Hughie MacKay's son, Patrick, has set up a GoFundMe page to"assist with the services required for Jax and Harley and purchase some needed personal items given everything has been lost in the fire." CONTRIBUTED - CONTRIBUTEDMeanwhile, MacKay’s son, Patrick, has set up a GoFundMe page to help the couple, with funds raised “utilized to assist with the services required for Jax and Harley and purchase some needed personal items given everything has been lost in the fire.

Saddened at losing the house where he was raised, as well as the dogs’ passing, Patrick tried to put things in perspective.
