Dream home turned nightmare renovation

Finishing their dream home has turned into a nightmare after the couple paid almost $24,000 to Raised Right General Contracting who have not done any work nor delivered the materials they allege were purchased. NICOLE SULLIVAN/CAPE BRETON POSTGLACE BAY, N.S. — Vanessa and Wayne Spencer bought their dream home knowing the 106-year-old property needed work.
The couple focused first on the need to renovate the interior before moving in with their son, who is now six. Originally from Millville, MacLennan isn't listed as an owner or director of Raised Right General Contracting with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies. Joyce Young Honig is the sole proprietor.
On July 9, MacLennan sent Wayne Spencer a text message to check to see if the couple wanted to move forward with the work. On July 12, MacLennan sent another text which indicated if the Spencers made payment now the work could be done within the discussed two- to three-week time frame. On July 15, the couple had a bank draft drawn up for $20,724, which the Spencers drove to Halifax to deliver.
After two months of getting the runaround, the couple started asking for the money back in full, which by publication time had not been done. Along with text messages, the Spencers have also left voicemail messages on the two numbers provided on the Raised Right business card for the office and MacLennan himself.
The text also says there's another “customer for 8k and about 40k plus to the government” and that Honig thinks the company should go bankrupt. MacLennan's text read:"Were having both material and occupancy permit delays…I expected this to be done a week ago but still this is being an issue…I will try to push to speed thing along and hopefully will be there sooner…I will let you know as I know. Respectfully, Charles."Cape Breton Regional Municipality confirmed an occupancy permit would not be needed by a company doing exterior work.
