Prelude to the Best Sommelier of Canada Contest | SaltWireSYDNEY, N.S. — A motion to pause a bill that’s faced pushback in Cape Breton was denied in the Nova Scotia Legislature on Thursday — setting the stage for a highly-anticipated meeting next week.

According to a CBRM projection, the bill would cause its annual equalization funding to fall by $2-million by 2029 — which could result in tax increases.Law Amendments committee NDP MLA Kendra Coombes argued for the 30-day hoist in the legislature. She said the government’s opposition to the motion was frustrating, given CBRM’s unique problems from the other 47 municipalities.

After Coombes and Sydney-Membertou MLA Derek Mombourquette spoke at length against the bill, Lohr told MLAs a hoist motion would be a “terrible idea” as it could delay payouts to the other municipalities. Lohr said he offered CBRM the chance to develop a separate charter rather than participate in the bill.

“The conversation that’s getting so much airtime is actually a conversation that shouldn’t be had,” he said, offering to help CBRM facilitate a charter.Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, left, and John Lohr, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Lohr said in legislature last week that delaying Bill 340 is a"terrible idea" and that CBRM had already met with his department's staff.
