Abbotsford Canucks have good thing going in 2023 Calder Cup playoffs and it\u0027s because of the growth of young players like Nielsen and Bains.

“I was pretty fortunate to have that long playoff run in the Western League with the Giants, with loud fans,” he recalled. “I had that same feeling on Wednesday.”“He’s got a lot of life, he brings a lot to our team on-and-off the ice,” Colliton explained. “He’s in the mix all the time, you can always hear him laughing in the rooms.”

Bains, who counted Pavel Datsyuk as his favourite player growing up and has modelled his efficient game after the legendary Detroit Red Wing, played five years of junior hockey with the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels before signing last summer with his hometown team. He didn’t know what to expect from pro hockey but what he found has been nothing but positive.

The coaches leaned hard on Bains to learn the defensive parts of the game, Nielsen said. “And now look at him, he went from healthy scratch to playing top-line minutes. He’s on the PK and the power play.” This is Nielsen’s second year as a pro. After a rookie season where he scored just four goals in 41 games, he worked hard on his skating last summer and the results are obvious: He scored 14 goals and added 27 assists in 64 games.
