The Vancouver Canucks were extremely active on Friday night, making two significant trades. The first saw them send J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers, while the second involved acquiring defenseman Marcus Pettersson from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Vancouver Canucks had a whirlwind Friday night, making two major trades before and after their game against the Dallas Stars. General manager Patrik Allvin, unfazed by the game day, orchestrated a blockbuster deal an hour before puck drop, sending J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers. But his activity didn't stop there. Shortly after the final horn sounded in Dallas, he pulled the trigger on another deal, acquiring defenseman Marcus Pettersson from the Pittsburgh Penguins .

The Canucks' return for Pettersson included forward Drew O'Connor. Heading back to Pittsburgh were forward Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais, prospect Melvin Fernström, and the first-round pick the Canucks received from the Rangers in the Miller trade. This move echoes the Canucks' previous trade where they flipped a first-round pick acquired from the New York Islanders to the Detroit Red Wings for Filip Hronek, though this transaction occurred much more swiftly. The Canucks' biggest asset surrendered in the Pettersson trade is the Rangers' 2025 first-round pick, protected to be the Rangers' 2026 first-round pick if it lands in the top 13 this year. The Rangers currently project to pick 12th overall, but they hope the addition of J.T. Miller will propel them into playoff contention. If the Rangers make the playoffs, their pick will fall in the second half of the first round, still valuable but less so than a lottery pick. The risk for the Canucks is that if the Rangers don't improve, the pick could become a top-ten selection in what is projected to be a very strong 2026 draft. The prospect heading to Pittsburgh is Melvin Fernström, a player the Canucks selected in the third round of the 2024 draft. Vancouver believed at the time that Fernström had first-round potential due to his offensive skills. However, his lack of speed and skating ability caused him to slide to the third round. Fernström has excelled in the Swedish junior league (J20 Nationell) with 11 goals and 18 points in 12 games. His production has been less impressive in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with 3 goals and 8 points in 35 games. Notably, he was left off the Swedish World Junior team despite his strong performance at the World Under-18 Championship the previous year. The players going to Pittsburgh, Vincent Desharnais and Danton Heinen, don't appear to be significant losses. While Heinen has contributed on the Canucks' penalty kill, Desharnais was frequently a healthy scratch due to inconsistency, and Heinen hasn't met expectations after signing a two-year deal
