The Canucks will miss the playoffs for a fourth consecutive year, but take a three-game win streak into Nashville where the Predators are in hot pursuit of the Central Division title.
5 p.m., Bridgestone Arena, TV: Sportsnet Pacific, Radio: Sportsnet 650 AMIncentive comes in many forms when you’re out of the playoffs. There are individual concerns, especially if you’re a free agent and want to leave the right impression, and the collective will to remind those heading to the playoffs that you plan to be there sooner than later.
What does all this mean for the Canucks? A lot. Travis Green is learning more about his club when it faces playoff-bound teams jockeying for position and sharpening their games. They are difficult games to get up for with the off-season looming Sunday, but how the mindset triggers the right reaction on the ice goes a long way to making summer decisions about how the roster is going to shape up next fall.
The Canucks had a 5-3 home-ice triumph and 4-3 overtime loss in Nashville during a pair of December meetings nine days apart in which the club turned in a 5-0-1 run. Bo Horvat had two goals in those games, while Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson also struck.Trade-deadline acquisition Tanner Pearson has looked more like an exclamation mark than a question mark the last seven games.
It would also give Boeser more ammo for contract-extension talks. Horvat hasn’t scored in six games and Pettersson has been blanked in nine straight games, and has but one goal in his last 21 outings.Quinn Hughes has played three NHL games, but the diminutive defenceman has already impressed with his ability to trigger the transition, be a force in three-on-three overtime and dependable to earn ice late in games to either protect a lead or make something happen.
