As much as the Vancouver Canucks could easily get caught up in the hoopla of facing their former captain Bo Horvat on Thursday — fans even chanted his name Tuesday after scoring his first goal on home ice for the New York Islanders — there’s something more crucial at stake in the process to establish a non-negotiable way to play the game.“Initially, it’s kind of a jolt and then you move on,” said Canucks coach Rick Tocchet. “It’s the history of the NHL.

Tocchet wants inside players and outside players. You have to get inside to score in today’s game and you have to be strong on the walls to win board battles and get pucks to linemates. They are staples of successful teams, but they don’t happen overnight.

“There are things you want to change, but you’ve got to be careful,” stressed Tocchet. “I just like the attitude. We’re trying to change the way we play and I’ve seen some really good steps.Who can penalty kill for us? Who can I rely on along the wall? “There are certain points in the game where you’re evaluating what guys can do in pressure situations. This is the stuff when you’re a good, structured team with a high hockey I.Q., that’s the stuff you have to rely on with 11 games in 22 days.”
