But Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko was beaten by Noel Acciari and Mark Pysyk in the opening three minutes – on an unlucky turnover by Canucks rookie Quinn Hughes and a step-slow backcheck by Elias Pettersson – and the 0-2 deficit flattened some of that inspiration. The Canucks were continually chasing back on outnumbered rushes after turning over the puck. Over 24 minutes, the Panthers outshot them 28-8 and the scoring chances were that lopsided, too.
“When you have young players – that’s the thing in this league – it’s the night-to-night consistency they show up and play with,” Benning said. “Sometimes you never know, right? I think our young players are exciting offensively. Even when we get down, we seem to find a way back into the game. But if we’re going to take the next step as a team and be consistent, we’ve got to tighten up defensively and play tighter hockey.
