Costmar was drafted in the seventh round in 2019. Teams have four years to sign players drafted from Sweden. Lockhart was picked in the sixth round in 2021. Teams have two years to sign players drafted from North American teams. Late-round picks going unsigned is not uncommon and teams tell stories on the challenges of projecting 18-year-old players.
Costmar was seen as a feisty centre, a player whose best chance to make the NHL was as a hard-working, agitating fourth liner.
