Pat Quinn was honoured as the NHL’s top coach in 1990
The Vancouver Canucks first foray into the NHL elite on a consistent basis came with the arrival of Pat Quinn. The big Irishman is amongst the most beloved Canucks figures of all time. We look at some of the original reporting from The Province and Vancouver Sun writers from his 1991-92 season where the Canucks cracked coach won Coach of the Year.
“It means a heckuva lot to me,” said Quinn, who became the first individual to win the award with two teams, having won in Philly in 1980. “It’s been quite a day. it means a lot to the organization. When we first came in there was a tradition, but one we didn’t want to continue. But we’ve only had one good season after a series of tough ones. The real test for us will be to continue what we did this year.
Bure, who’s off to Montreal for Saturday’s draft, where his brother Valeri is expected to go in the first round, credited his teammates — especially countryman Igor Larionov. He recalled a conversation with Larionov in January. The win for Bure means a $50,000 bonus because of a clause in his contract. It also adds $50,000 per season to his salary for the rest of the contract.“No doubt had a good year and it was going to be tough to match it,” said McLean, “but, sure, it’s disappointing.
“He’s taken that franchise and turned it upside down,” says Edmonton Oiler boss Glen Sather, another Memorial Cup teammate of Quinn. “If it wasn’t for Pat Quinn, I don’t know if this organization would be there.”
